Star Trek: The Wonder Years
New trailer: http://www.startrekmovie.com/

I still wish they kept Enterprise on for one more season. Ent-S4 was awesome and S5 could have really been a great Star Trek addition - it definitely got cut down right as it reached its peak.

As for Kirk & Spock, the Wonder years... man I just don't know. I've never missed a Star Trek Movie in the theaters (even saw the first one)... but this might just be a wait and rent for me.

Yeah... I don't know about this one. It would need to get insanely good reviews for me to shell out theater prices for it.

Hey everybody! How have you all been? Is there still a regular NWN game of any description going on?

Speaking of Star Trek XI: saw it last night. To my surprise, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Despite a few blasphemies that are left unresolved, I found it generally quite respectful of all that's gone before.

Lo and behold, it does. So Liz and I are going to see it tomorrow.

I thought it was very good. Fun action movie with cool special effects. I even cheered when the bad guy was gonna get it in the end. Good cast, especially the guy playing Spock. It wasn't a perfect movie. You got to set aside alot of hardcore Star Trek knowledge and just enjoy it as a movie. Even then, there are a few plot holes and sets I didn't care for (Engineering kinda bothered me). But all that was nit-picky stuff. Movies are a form of entertainment, and this entertained me. Worth the ticket price, IMO.

I will hold fast* to my pledge to not give $ to Paramount on this flick b/c they canceled the 5th season of Enterprise! They killed Enterprise! Those bastards! I know Enterprise wasn't "loved" by the majority of trek fans, however its 4th season kicked butt! There were many crossover episodes to make that season worth watching on its own.

*ok I'm really very tempted - especially since there's an IMAX  Shocked version out. But no.. must not give in...

Oh, the "new" spock is the uber-villian from Heroes. I think he makes a perfect "dark" Spock.

Well I never said how he got it. Though after the first few scenes, you kinda expect the killer rabbits to have something to do with it. You know, turning on their master and all.

I can understand that mentality. I was furious at Sci-Fi Channel for canceling Farscape. Refused to watch any of their crap, and let them know as much.

But when you get around to borrowing the DVD from a friend, I suggest you at least watch it on a big screen.

Yeah, and he's very good in this movie. SD, being the Spock-o-phile she is, nearly crushed my hand in fan-girl giddiness during many of his scenes.

More Lord of the Rings (haven't watched it yet, but from the first few minutes it looked interesting ~40minutes)

Well... Star Wreck... it was worse than I imagined it would be... as a "star trek" it went where no star trek has gone before - to the trash.
As a sci-fi movie (and not as a star trek) it really wasn't too bad. I'd place it below Galaxy Quest though and I think that says a lot.

Fantasy Movie: The Gamers: Dorkness Rising...
Take a weak plot about a group of role-players and no budget and you've got an instant classic. I'd say it's worth watching if there's nothing else on and you've got netflix to stream it instantly. It did get a single laugh out of me... Free Enterprise was more amusing.

9: looks rather interesting... hope it's as good as its trailer.

9: very unique... worth seeing, really can't describe it.

District 9: also rather unique... at first I thought it was going to be Alien-Nation rip off, but it went in its own direction. Also worth seeing, though I hated the protagonist.

Terminator Salvation: Much better film than I thought it would be (considering how much I disliked T3 due to its nanobot BS). This one truly had me on the edge the entire time wondering whether the main character was a hero or a villain. I grant it a solid 3.5 stars out of 5. It is worth watching a few times, but doesn't quite have the gritty grimey awesomeness of the 1st Terminator film... or even the cool action of the 2nd. But rather comes in 3rd place for the series and way ahead of the 1.5 stars I'd give T3.

I'm way behind on my geek viewing: I haven't seen any of these yet (Trek, District 9, Terminator 4).

Well I've just watched The Prisoner 2009...
Great Actors - truly incredible cast!!!
Great Village Background potential - nicely done - wonderful environment...well the little bit you see anyway.

Very bad script and plot. Zero action, zero "rebellion", zero interest.
6 hours and 0 thought.

Alright, it wasn't that bad. However, what they could have done with it should have been awesome. So now I shall await the real No.6 to have a happy return one day. Sadly, the creators of The Prisoner 2009 seem to have missed the point of the series. Yet another remake-flop. (That's two in a row counting Star Wreck)

Unlike the original, this version will not cause riots in the streets of London...or anywhere else. This remake was most eagerly awaited, now is most easily forgotten. Perhaps I shall return to the original Village and forget this other world ever existed.

We saw District 9 in the theaters. Loved it. I actually liked the protagonist. I thought he was very human, flawed with a hint of nobility at the end. If anything, I didn't like the antagonist. The military leader guy. I thought his bloodthirst and cruelty was a bit over-the-top.

Prisoner 2009? I completely agree with you. Great cast and well-designed sets. And.... that's about it. We were so disappointed. The ending felt like such a letdown. Bad TV! No supper for you!

I want to see Terminator Salvation. I figure the bad reviews will lower the bar to the point where I actually enjoy it. Wink

I definitely want to see 9. I know it is on our NetFlix queue. Hm.. maybe I'll bump it up a few slots...

2012
Not horrible, but just a little too over the top... too many "escapes at the last second" every time. Too many major disasters when just one would do to destroy the world. It quickly became overload and overkill. Then a plot which didn't quite make sense. (See brief & vague spoiler below). This one gets a C- from me.

I normally like disaster movies even if the cause of the disaster is a bit unrealistic, but usually the destruction looks real and the characters can normally be related to. Nope, not this movie. The Characters actions were bizarre and rather 1-D (like stick figures)...

*people could "buy" their way aboard the government created sanctuaries which were being built in China??? Then launch them out of their safety zone before it was safe??? Um... yes, because $ really matters when the entire world goes *poof*. Hello? There are no more bloody banks! Where's the $ now? So that just didn't make sense. And what's the offense for stow-aways? Where did an ex-boxer get $3 billion from? Billion?!? The richest man in the world only has 53 billion.According to Forbes there's only about 300 people with more than $3 billion in the entire world. That and the spoiled kids share their dog with a peasant...
Doesn't matter anyway - since it was built in China they're all going to get lead poisoning or drink polluted milk or die of something easily avoidable. *goes off into the distance ranting about this film*

The Prisoner (2009) - I did see this one (yay AMC!) ...

It had the germ of a good movie buried inside it, although I don't think it quite pulled it off. The original Prisoner is a 60's classic with just that right blend of style, action, trippy 60's philosophy (society vs. individualism etc.) and stunt doubles that makes it in many ways the spy show equivalent of Star Trek. The one thing the original had that the remake lacks was the sense of fun: the original was built much more on the "game" of the Prisoner's escape versus his capitulation and defeat. The remake glossed over this - especially after the first installment or two. The remake was a nice sci-fi story, but it just really didn't get me to root for the main character like the 60's version did. For one thing, Patrick MacGoohan is way cooler than Jim Caviezel - two hundred percent better smirks e.g. - plus he's a Bondian-type spy with a bitchin' Lotus Seven car, come on, how cool is that! The 60's show also had the novel idea to introduce a new "villain" - the new No. 2 - each episode which was not only thematically interesting but also worked on the superficial "game"-ness of the show.

OK, it's obvious I'm a big fan of the original  Wink The remake was just alright - kind of a Prisoner, Matrix edition, not bad overall but nowhere near the pure awesome of the original.
